Fun Times with the Boys

Jacob and Micah seem to be really starting to enjoy each other's company. This is a wonderful stage to watch. They're mimicking each other's actions, Micah loves to tickle Jacob, Jacob loves to hold Micah's hand. It is so adorable to watch! Jonathan and I took the boys to the zoo for a bit yesterday. It was really hot already at 1100, so we didn't plan to stay long. Well, Micah had other plans! He got so upset every time we tried to skirt past an animal. He wanted to see each and every one! He especially loved looking at the snakes in the reptile house and petting the stingrays. Jacob wanted to pet the stingrays, but couldn't seem to get past the fear of falling in the water with the stingrays. They both had a great time at the zoo, and Daddy got to come along this time, too.

Micah said a couple of new words today and yesterday. Yesterday, at the zoo, he kept asking, "What dat?" and wanted detailed explanations of what animals he was looking at. Today, he said he was "ungry" for hungry. Jacob asked for "yogurt" and loves asking where Logan is (now that he can say the name properly) and says Micah's name very clearly. Jacob is one who gets his mind set on one way to say a word, even though he may not be saying it correctly (or even close). He's finally starting to come around and we're starting to be able to understand more and more of what he's saying. He still has his own way of saying "please" and "thank you" and neither one sounds like what he's trying to say... so we're still working on those. He's still learning to count to 10 and learn his colors.

We seem to be making progress on the sleep front. Today, Micah slept until almost 7:30! I had to keep checking on him to make sure he was breathing, LOL. It would sure be nice if he did that again tomorrow, but I doubt that he will. Last night, he was just wiped out from the two very short cat-naps he took on the way to and from the zoo.

What's new...

Micah has some new words and is starting on putting two words together when he speaks. Part of new vocabulary: hand, (ba)nana, boat, bike, (s)tar, ball, bye mom, where go?, choo-choo, eat (very clear), where, all better.

Jacob and Micah are both growing like weeds and still really keep us hopping. They are very active boys. They love going to the playground, going for walks, and playing in the baby pool outside. Micah has started to pocket food in his mouth, for hours at a time. It's very frustrating and happens even with foods he loves. The boys really seem to be enjoying each other's company these days. Micah loves to try to tickle Jacob, and on occasion, we have found them holding hands. It's soooo cute! Neither of the boys seems to be gaining weight these days as they become very picky eaters, but Micah is now about 36" tall and Jacob is a tad shorter. Jacob talks in complete sentences now, though there are still many times that we have absolutely no clue what he's saying. He counts to 8 on his own, is learning his color, and working on opposites. Speech therapy for Micah is done for the summer, so we're just enjoying hanging out now.

I'm so bad.....

I'm sorry, I find myself frequently forgetting that I have a blog! It's been a blur of activity still. Micah continues with his therapies 4 times a week, though this week is spring break, so no therapy. He's doing soooo well with it! He has a new AVT therapist who is a bundle of energy. Micah responded to her from the get-go, which is certainly a blessing. As for new words in his vocabulary, he can now tell us when he's stuck "says stuck", says his older brother's name (I'm told this, at least). He talks all the time, even if his processors aren't on him. He still pulls them off when he's angry. No surprise there, there, though. That boy is very strong-willed! He's learning to dress and undress himself. He's also telling me when he wants his diaper changed. I keep trying to put him on the potty, but he hasn't peed or pooped on it yet.

Jacob is still trying to talk in complete sentences. He also will now tell me if he is poopied and wanting a diaper change. But, alas, no success with getting him to pee or poop on the potty----though last night he peed on the floor in front of the potty, lol. Jacob is still very much enjoying Micah's therapy sessions. He loves to answer questions for the therapist. He seems to be not as distracting during the sessions now (at least when I'm home). I seem to be missing about 50% of the sessions due to my work schedule, which I have no control over. I'm just thankful that progress is being made. That's what's important!

The boys' second birthday is coming up in less than two weeks. My, how fast these past two years have flown! I've survived the first two years with twins! WooHoo!!! They no longer look like babies. They look like adorable little boys, which I'm sure you'll see in the video clip ;-)

Their Artistic Side...

I pulled out the fingerpaints for the boys on Sunday and they had a good time. It was a lot of fun to watch what they did with the paints. At first, they played with the paint and spread it around on the paper, then they decided that it was really meant to be body paints. Here are a couple of video clips of their fun...

New words for Micah

Micah is attempting now to say names, such as Daddy and Jacob. He makes the ssss sound consistently, can hear whispering, says dog, wow, bye. I think his vocabulary now consists of about 20 words or so. I can hear Micah attempting to speak in sentences, but it's only with his babbling. It's so great to watch.

Jacob is attempting to speak in sentences. I still can't understand half of what he's saying, but he sure is trying hard!

I'll try to get some video clips of them talking very soon.

Wack, wack, wack

Micah just saw some ducks on tv and said, "wack, wack, wack". No coaching at all, totally spontaneous. More proof that his speech therapy is working!!!

Sickness!

My household has been fighting the winter illnesses, and it just seems to be doing this vicious cycle. The boys had what I believe was RSV a few weeks ago...finally got them so that they're not wheezing anymore, and now they have bronchitis. I'm going to see if they can get in to see the dr. today. On top of that, I now have a sinus infection (hubby had it last week). Fun times, let me tell ya, fun times! (can you hear the sarcasm dripping?) With the repeated illnesses come the poor appetites. The boys are even refusing to eat favorite foods (Micah, who adores bananas, wouldn't finish his yesterday and neither would even eat their marshmallows the other day).

I do believe that Micah said "dog" yesterday, though! He heard a neighbor's dog barking, pointed to his ear, and said an approximation of dog. Though it wasn't a clear word, it DID sound like dog to me. That was fun to hear! I've been leary of bumping up his speech processors to the next level because of the constant illness (I know they're not related, but bumping his processors up can cause him to be even more fussy). He definitely understands "give me a kiss" as I said that to him yesterday, completely out of context of what we were doing, and he did give me a kiss. It's so fun to know that he's understanding what we're saying to him. We have to remind ourselves that he can't hear us if his processors are off for one reason or another. It's been hard keeping up the sign language, but I'm working hard to maintain it and to grow our vocabulary. It really does help us understand what he's trying to say when he says the word and signs it (it helps us considerably with Jacob, too, for that matter)

Another new word for Micah today. He's now saying "uh-oh", and will repeat when I tell him to say "ma" and "more". Now, if we could just get him feeling better so he's not so whiny or clingy. Jacob is really into dancing these days. It's so cute to watch him spring into action any time he hears music playing! Logan came home yesterday, so four of the five kids are under our roof again!

Vocabulary Lessons

Micah now has a vocabulary of about 5 word approximations. He says "hot" "more" "hi" "mouse" (as in Mickey Mouse), and "ma". He is also understanding an amazing amount of words. He's starting to follow commands such as "go get the book" or "pick up the shoes". He continuously points to objects and makes it known that he wants us to put a name to what he's pointing at, such as a picture or a flower. Jacob's vocabulary is also expanding daily. He's now starting to experiment with putting words together to form a basic sentence. He loves making animal sounds and hearing stories.

It seems that their appetites are FINALLY starting to return. It has been a month now that it has been very difficult to get them to eat anything because they just haven't felt well.

Favorite things to do these days? Micah's is climbing or turning on the chair massager. Jacob's is throwing fits and biting his brother.

Music

WooHoo! I just figured out how to add music to my page! So, consider yourself warned. My playlist will contain music that I enjoy, current music and oldies that I grew up with and find soothing (or just bring back fond memories). I hope you enjoy!

Micah's new word video...

Progress!!!

Yesterday was Micah's mapping appointment in San Francisco. Mapping is when the audiologist uploads new programs into his cochlear implants. This is meant to further improve his ability to hear sounds, loud or soft, depending on what she changes in his programs. It went well, except for the fussy toddler part. On our way home, Micah said "more" as I was giving him crackers. He said it purposefully and several times. I believe he's also trying to say "dog" and "up". Yay for Micah!!!

In other news, both boys have colds (read very snotty noses, clinginess, and fussiness). I think we will actually get to enjoy a nice quiet day at home to enjoy the rain. The boys were jumping on the sofa the other day when I was at work, and Jacob ended up with a big black eye. Here are some pictures of him sporting his shiner, and a video clip of the boys--note that Micah say's his new word in this!

We just got back from a quick trip to Disneyland. It was a lot of fun, but exhausting. We were really looking forward to having the boys meet Mickey Mouse for the first time. It went as expected....Micah LOVED Mickey, and Jacob cried.

They had a lot of fun on what rides we took them on. Amazingly, Jacob didn't scream at the barracudas coming for us on the Nemo Submarine ride, or at the darkness on Pirates of the Caribbean. We look forward to going again, but I definitely think that 8 pm is just too late to leave for Los Angeles! The boys were tired and very cranky the next day whenever we would wait in line for the rides. The temperature was in the 80's, and it was more crowded than I expected for a February day at Disney. We got there at opening time and still had to wait 20 minutes for the Nemo submarine ride. I was so sad that It's a Small World STILL wasn't open. They plan to open it this weekend--figures! We have so much fun getting our hotel rooms through Priceline! We stayed at the Hyatt Regency for just $60/night. It was awesome. And, I called ahead to let them know of our late arrival and that we'd need two cribs delivered to the room, and when we got there, the cribs were there and all set up. How nice that was, especially since we didn't get to the room until after midnight. We've called ahead to other hotels before, and only on one other occasion were the cribs set up before we got there. It is so frustrating to arrive after a long day of traveling to have to wait 20 minutes longer, while the babies are getting wound up, to have the cribs delivered.

In other news, Micah has mastered climbing out of his crib and we have been trying to figure out what to do from here, as our older children never did this. Jacob has a black eye from jumping on the sofa with Micah, but neither of them learned a lesson from this. Micah sounds like he is trying to say "hi" and "up" now. Maybe he'll catch up with Jacob soon. Jacob is trying to put together sentences now. I think their appetites may finally be returning after about 4 weeks of having poor appetites. Tonight for dinner, they each ate two full pieces of French toast made with Texas toast. Wow!

Back to the daily grind....

Speech therapy sessions started again this week after a nice 3 wk. break for the holidays. And, the boys look like they've come down with chicken pox. It doesn't look bad at all, just a few spots that are scabbing over, and some fussiness from just not feeling so well. There aren't really even enough spots to take pictures of.

On a lighter note, it sure is nice to have some sunshine again! We've had cloudy days for a couple of weeks now with some occasional rain here and there. I feel like I have more energy when the sun is shining. It really does affect my moods when it's overcast.

Jacob seemed to really enjoy The Land Before Time today. Before this, he didn't really pay attention to the movie. It's such a cute movie! Micah is just feeling really snuggly. Of course, you won't hear any complaints about that from me!

This 'n That

So, as we were on our lonnnnng drive home from San Francisco again last night, I started wondering about how many times we've made this trip now. If I'm counting correctly, we've done this once every month since last July, twice in November, and it really seems like there was even a second time one other month. So, we've been to SF at least once/month for the last several months. No wonder it was so hard driving back. The twins did very well for most of the trip, but in that last hour or two, they just couldn't handle it anymore (and I was right there with them). It's so much to ask of them to sit in their carseats for so long every month. I am soooo looking forward to when we don't have to go so far for these appointments. But, Micah's progressing so well with his hearing, so I'll just keep reminding myself of that every day. He's now starting to tell us that he wants his processors on in the morning. We're just so pleased with how he's handling everything. Poor Jacob wants the same thing. Today Logan leaves for college. We have yet to get any word on his student loan, so he may not actually be IN college this semester. He may have to sit it out and spend some time at MomMom and Pop's house. We shall see....

Been a while, huh?

Just when I thought life couldn't get any crazier/busier, I'm proven wrong once again! This year, for the first time EVER, I managed to get all of my shopping and gift wrapping done before Christmas AND managed to send out Christmas "cards". I was quite happy about that. I feel like I'm finally starting to get enough energy back now to get to the real housecleaning, too. Right now, we have someone that comes every other week (was weekly for almost a year). I'm feeling like soon we can get rid of that expense. The economy is sooo bad that I'm really looking for ways to be more frugal without really having to sacrifice too, too much.

Here's a picture of Jonathan reading to the boys at bedtime:

Micah is progressing in leaps and bounds with his hearing and it's so fun to watch how he reacts to sounds around him. This week, he noticed the microwave beeping and got all excited about that. He's trying to mimic the dogs barking, and runs to see who's at the door when they start to bark. Jacob, of course, just has to be in on the action. Jacob is learning new words every day now. Right now, I'm wishing I had one of those really nice cameras to takes pictures of the boys and have good quality shots.

Here's a video clip of the babies during one of Micah's Auditory Verbal Therapy sessions at home. It was taken shortly after his implants were activated.

My "baby" is going away to college this week. He's been my baby for 18 yrs. before the twins were born. It's really a bittersweet feeling. I know I'll miss him, but I'm so ready for him to learn about what responsibility really is. My daughter is bracing herself for the seven long months that her husband will be away on cruise. Thankfully, she'll be very busy with her second semester of nursing school and hopefully more visits home.
And here are some pictures of my kids from this Christmas. The first is of my oldest son with his girlfriend, the second is of my daughter and her husband, the third older "child" is my third son. Then, of course, there are the twins:
